Functional Inertia – Day 2
December 4th, 2006 | by Mitchell Allen |If you read my Hello, World post, you may recall the five symptoms of my made-up term for failure to take action:
- excuses
- procrastination
- indecision
- perfectionism
- analysis paralysis
Once I overcame the excuses, procrastination and perfectionism, it was easy to get started. However, I am by no means cured, so I continue the diagnosis with day two.
Day 2: What is the Purpose of Your Blog?
Symptoms: indecision, analysis paralysis
Did I want a theme for my blog? This would require that I write about the same topic, every day. I don’t think that I have anything unique to say about website design and marketing. I’m just filling a need for those services in my marketplace.
One of the things I wanted to do was to republish my website critiques. I had made these critiques exclusive to AtHomeResources.com and, because so many of the websites faced the same hurdles, I decided that it would be beneficial to publicize these common issues.
Here is where the indecision comes in: what if the recipients of the website critique don’t want the world to know about their critique? This alone was enough to stop me from posting. Too bad I never thought of putting a disclaimer at the beginning of each review: “This review may be made public in the future.”
Well, I still had other ideas for the blog: spotlighting my clients’ websites, promoting my own website, extolling the virtues of networking, and on and on. I just kept thinking and analyzing. Inertia.
The medicine for today is not in the form of a pill, but a poll. I decided to ask the recipients, as well as future webmasters, how they feel about having their reviews publicized.
[Update] The poll no longer exists. Everyone agreed to share their reviews.
