Spambots Ate My Cell Phone!

Why am I not surprised? I signed up for Yahoo Alerts, using my Verizon Wireless SMS address.
SMS, which stands for Send More Spam (actually, it’s Short Message Service) lets people send and receive text messages.

Unfortunately, since my SMS address is simply a ten-digit number @vtext.com, I suppose it was just a matter of time before the spambots hit on it.

But, is that true? Is the sudden swarm of SMS spam simply a random event? Did I raise my hand unwittingly when I turned on Yahoo Alerts? After all, I have had my cell phone for over two years and I had never received as much as a hint of insider trading, or surreptitious pharmaceuticals.

I’m turning to you for help. How have you combatted this scourge?
