Data Processing

Do You Work with Files?

Are things as simple as you’d like? If they aren’t, it’s probably your fault. Heh, that was just a wink to let you know that this is not a sales page. Indeed, it is your fault if you settle for mind-numbing tedium. You can’t be blamed if you’re trying to find help but just don’t know where to turn or even what to ask for!

Let’s consider some problems:

  • You have a complicated spreadsheet that must be updated periodically
  • You have to download or receive raw data and generate reports from it
  • You have to clean up a huge file by getting rid of all HTML tags but you have to keep the web addresses
  • You have to extract a bunch of email addresses from a web directory for your quarterly newsletter*
  • You have to convert a forum post from BBCode to HTML
  • You have to swap columns of last names and first names – every month
  • You need a quick way to update web-based data

* If you scrape websites for nefarious purposes, that’s not nice, so stop it.

That’s a short list and probably doesn’t even mention your problem. However, each of these challenges share some common elements that may also exist with your problem. First, each involves too much data for simple cutting and pasting to handle. Second, the data needs to be altered or reorganized. Finally, most of them are repetitive, meaning that the task must be completed over and over again.

There are so many ways to deal with data processing challenges. This introduction certainly is not going to be enough to even begin addressing possibilities. Instead, just consider the broad ones:

  • Hire a competent data processing professional
  • Buy specialized software
  • Learn tips for solving specific problems

Each is a valid option. Hiring a professional costs the most money but uses the least of your time. Buying software may be less expensive, but you’ll have to learn how to use it. Obviously, teaching yourself new tricks can be the least expensive option but, it will consume the most time.

These options are not mutually exclusive. You may need a professional to “set things up” and a program to “keep things running”, afterward. Of course, tips are always welcome. Imagine a certified organizer coming into your home. This professional will help you eliminate clutter and recommend a system for remaining clutter-free. If you follow the system, you should never have to call the professional again!
